August is National Family Fun Month!

In the spirit of “National Family Fun Month” we wanted to share some ideas of activities that can be done with older, and sometimes less mobile, members of your family.  We get so caught up in our day-to-day busyness that sometimes we forget to carve out quality time with those we love the most. The benefits of spending quality time with our family are countless, not to mention the good feeling of helping make someone we love feel appreciated and special.

For Loved Ones with Limited Mobility:

Play Games: Whether it’s a board game, card game, word game, or sharing our favorite tablet game, playing together is fun and rewarding.

Cooking or Baking: Whether you choose some old family recipes that will help your family reminisce or create new recipes together as a family, this is a great way to create new memories together.

Tea Party: Invite a group or keep it small. Either way sitting together for a nice afternoon tea provides a great opportunity to catch up and have some laughs.

Movie Night: Take your loved ones out on the town and enjoy something for the whole family at your local cinema or stay in, cozy on the couch, in the comfort of home while you share freshly popped homemade popcorn.

Arts & Crafts: Pick a craft that the whole family can enjoy like painting, coloring, drawing, or working on a scrapbook or family photo album project.

For Loved Ones with Good Mobility:

Have a Picnic: Pack a lunch and spread out a blanket to enjoy an outdoor adventure together.

Visit the Museum: Many local attractions can accommodate the special needs of your loved ones, check online ahead of time so you choose a location that will work for their needs.

Gardening: There’s nothing more fun than getting out in the sunshine and digging into the earth. Family gardening is a great way to connect and learn from each other.

Go to the Park: Find a location that will be fun for the whole family to enjoy together.

Take a Fall Drive: With the fall season around the corner, plan a road trip with your family to enjoy the fall colors and maybe pick a fun destination to create more magical memories together.

No matter what you choose to do together, quality time with your loved ones is sure to bring you closer as well as increase everyone’s happiness and reduce the overwhelming stress of the day-to-day.
